BeBOP Shines at the 81st ATI Congress: Showcasing Innovation and Circularity

The BeBOP project recently took center stage at the 81st ATI (Associazione Termotecnica Italiana) Congress, where its latest advancements and milestones were highlighted through two distinct abstract presentations delivered by our Coordinator, Martina Fantini (EU CORE Consulting).

1.  BeBOP: a breakthrough SOEC-based power-and-biomass-to-methanol pathway for circular and carbon-efficient industrial decarbonization

In the first presentation — co-delivered by BeBOP’s Scientific Coordinator Matteo Romano and Giulio Guandalini from Politecnico di Milano — the team provided a comprehensive overview of the BeBOP project, detailing its innovative concept, core challenges, and objectives.

The session also spotlighted key preliminary results achieved during the first two years of implementation, including: The integrated plant layout design; the 3D-printed methanol synthesis reactor; SOEC durability and kinetic characterization; the recovery of elements via leaching.

2. From innovation to deployment: exploitation pathways and standardisation needs for circular power and biomass-to-Methanol systems. Lessons learned from the BeBOP project

The second presentation, also led by Martina Fantini, focused on the first 20 months of work dedicated to circularity and exploitation.

Martina detailed the impact of seven dedicated circularity workshops and a collaborative joint event with the Horizon Europe project UNITED CIRCLES. These gatherings fostered critical engagement with industrial stakeholders, standardisation bodies, technology providers, and researchers, helping the consortium identify key exploitation barriers and opportunities for bio and e-methanol production.

Particular emphasis was placed on the vital role of standardisation in facilitating the scale-up of integrated biomass-to-methanol systems.
