BeBOP Project Partners

BeBOP gathers the major players in the SOEC and Methanol value chain and has been assembled to mobilise necessary capabilities, experience, and knowledge to efficiently achieve the project aims and impacts, in a timely and cost effectively way. The consortium, gathering 12 institutions from 7 EU Member States, includes four SMEs (EUCORE, ELCOGEN, ICODOS, and ECODESIGN), one large company (WOOD), two universities (POLIMI and LUT), three research centers (INERIS, VTT, and RIC), and one Italian National Standards Body (UNI), being able to ensure intersectorality, complementary expertise, state-of-the-art capabilities, equipment, and infrastructure.

EU CORE Consulting S.r.l.

EUropean COoperation in Research and Education – is a consulting firm that offers partner design, administrative management, reporting, evaluation and research services to universities, research centers, companies, public administrations, non-profit organizations wishing to participate in research and cooperation projects funded by the European Union or other national and international initiatives.

• PYSOLO (PYrolysis of biomass by concentrated SOLar pOwer) which combines the use of concentrated solar power and biomass pyrolysis to offer a solution for both decarbonisation and defossilisation. 

• SYRIUS (SOEC HYDROGEN INTEGRATION AND CIRCULAR USE IN STEELMAKING PROCESS) which aims to reduce the CO emissions in the steel production through the use of SOEC technology

Within BEBOP, WOOD is:

  • Leading the WP5 (T5.1, T5.4) – “Preliminary techno-economic and CBA in relation to the BeBOP full-scale plant”
  • Leading the WP6 (T6.1) – “Final techno-economic analysis of the full-scale plants”
  • Leading the WP6 (T6.2) – “Pre-FEED study of the commercial scale”

The most relevant projects where WOOD is and has been involved in, are:  

  • 1-Bio-Methanol Project: Concept Study and Licensor Selection for a Bio-Methanol plant in Thailand starting from Biomass. Syngas produced from gasification will be fed to a methanol synthesis reactor.
  • 2-Green Methanol Plant: FEED project. Methanol is produced starting from Biogas together with renewable Hydrogen and CO2, aiming at substituting all the fossil Methanol used by the Client in Europe.
  • 6-FlexSNG: “Flexible Production of Synthetic Natural Gas and Biochar via Gasification of Biomass and Waste Feedstocks”. Wood participated as a partner in this call. The primary responsibilities included creating a Conceptual Design and conducting a techno-economic assessment of the commercial-scale VESTA methanation unit and final gas clean-up. A risk assessments and developed exploitation plans have been performed, while providing expertise on gas quality requirements to optimize the gas clean-up process.
  • 8-COMSYN: “Compact Gasification and Synthesis process for Transport Fuels”. Wood participated as partner in this Eu funded project. The role was to work mainly on the design and evaluation of an industrial size production unit, defining 3-4 production concepts, designing unit operations and overall processes. Wood estimated the investment and the operating costs of the industrial size production unit and supported also in the definition of the most promising process configurations, aiming at the evaluation of an optimal integration between gasification and synthesis plant as well as the optimal plant size.

Elcogen

Aktsiaselts Elcogen (ELCOGEN): – Elcogen is a manufacturer of clean energy technology that delivers affordable green hydrogen and emission-free electricity. We supply the core technology that sits at the heart of energy security and transition away from fossil fuels. Elcogen’s core solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology is flexible and can be applied to a broad range of residential, industrial, and commercial applications, enabling multiple types of systems to produce and use green energy.

Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI): Founded in 2008, the Department of Energy is a recognized center of excellence in research and education, as part of Politecnico di Milano, the largest scientific and technological university in Italy with more than 47’000 students and 1’200 faculty members. Its experimental and numerical activities cover all the complexity of the energy world.

Institut National De L Environnement Industriel Et Des Risques

Established in 1990, is a French public body under the Ministry of Environment. It specializes in assessing and preventing risks from economic activities impacting health, safety, and the environment. Ineris conducts research and provides expertise in industrial safety, chemical toxicity, air quality, and underground risks, focusing on evaluating, preventing, and controlling chronic and accidental risks.

Lappeenrannan – Lahden Teknillinen Yliopisto

Icodos

ICODOS develops process technology to produce sustainable methanol and methanol-based hydrocarbons. Their patented technology enables low-cost e-methanol production at-scale, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting a low-carbon economy.

Brief description of the entity’s contribution to the project activities

ICODOS will develop a modular and transportable methanol synthesis unit, equipped with a 3D-printed reactor, capable of producing up to 90 kg of methanol per day and allowing flexible and dynamic plant operation. (Leading the WP1 – “SOEC and MeOH units engineering and design“).
