BeBOP and FLEXBY have joined forces to strengthen European leadership in innovative biomass-to-biofuel solutions. This new partnership reinforces BeBOP’s clustering and networking strategy, expanding its engagement within the European research and innovation ecosystem.
FLEXBY is a 4-year EU-funded project involving 10 partners from 5 EU countries, funded under Horizon Europe Cluster 5 (Climate, Energy and Mobility). The project addresses key challenges in the biofuel sector: competition with food production due to the production of biofuel relying on food-related crops, sustainability of the value chain, food security and cost-effectiveness. To overcome this, FLEXBY develops advanced biofuels derived from waste materials. The project uses biogenic waste streams, such as microalgae from wastewater and industrial oily sludge, and converts them into biofuels and bio‑hydrogen through an innovative microwave pyrolysis process. This approach reduces emissions, supports circular resource use, and contributes to the sustainable deployment of biofuels in the transport sector.
In the coming years, the collaboration between BeBOP and FLEXBY will align with major European initiatives and act as a catalyst for the dissemination and communication of both projects’ results across a wider ecosystem. By joining efforts, the two projects aim to maximise visibility, increase stakeholder engagement, and accelerate the industrial uptake of renewable methanol. Ultimately, this partnership supports the decarbonisation of the chemical sector and advances Europe’s transition toward a more circular and sustainable economy.
